What a reporting pack should preserve

A pack that only presents the current month is a slide. A pack that preserves context lets the reader ask a real question next month.

The purpose of preservation

A reporting pack is not consumed in the moment. It is consumed against the last one, and eventually against a year of them. If the shape changes, the reader has to translate before they can think.

What to preserve

  • The same statement layout every month, in the same order.
  • A short commentary written by a human, distinct from the numbers themselves.
  • One or two operating views chosen for this business (contribution, retention, project margin) that persist across periods.
  • Variance context: prior period, prior year, or plan, with a documented reason for movement.
  • The exceptions carried into the period, and the resolution.

What to leave out

Everything that changes shape without a decision to change it. Novel views are useful once; recurring reporting requires a stable frame.
