Compare ecommerce tax preparers on inventory, marketplace payouts, sales tax boundaries, Form 1099-K reconciliation, and the returns included in the fee.

Close the sales record before choosing a preparer

An ecommerce tax return depends on sales, returns, inventory, fees, and the entity's tax classification. Start with the books' condition. A tax preparer cannot resolve a year of unexplained marketplace deposits merely by receiving a year-end P&L.

List every storefront, marketplace, processor, inventory location, and legal entity. Add prior returns, state registrations, and any notices. That brief lets a provider distinguish tax preparation from bookkeeping cleanup and state compliance work.

Compare the service combinations

doola publishes formation, bookkeeping, and business tax services, with ecommerce among its stated areas. Bookkeeper360 advertises bookkeeping and related business finance services. Institution offers bookkeeping and tax services with compliance support. A local or specialist tax practice can also be a suitable choice when it understands your channels and inventory.

Institution publishes this article and has a commercial interest in the decision. This shortlist describes advertised services; it does not claim independent testing, guaranteed tax savings, or that all providers include sales tax filings. Request a written scope from each candidate. Institution is not a public accounting firm or law firm. Licensed work uses qualified professionals under the agreed scope.

Ask how they reconcile Form 1099-K

The IRS explains that Form 1099-K reports payment activity and must be used with other records to determine taxable income. The reported amount is not automatically the seller's profit or the net cash payout. Refunds, fees, timing, and non-sales items need an explanation.

Request a reconciliation by provider and taxpayer ID. Check gross activity against order records, identify differences, and retain the settlement reports. If one account processes payments for two entities, raise that issue before a return is drafted.

Separate income tax and sales tax work

A business income tax engagement does not necessarily include sales tax registration, returns, exemption certificates, or resolving marketplace-facilitator questions. Ask who owns each state and which evidence the preparer needs to evaluate your obligations.

Inventory creates another boundary. Provide beginning and ending inventory, purchasing records, freight and duties, returns, and write-offs. Have the accountant confirm the costing method and tax treatment. A spreadsheet that values only items currently for sale can omit goods held elsewhere or in transit.

Verify qualifications and the exit record

The IRS recommends checking preparer qualifications. Confirm who signs the federal return, who can represent you if questions arise, and whether notice support is included. Ask how additional entities, states, extensions, and amendments are priced.

After filing, keep signed returns, acknowledgments, payment records, and any bookkeeping adjustments. If a provider prepares both books and taxes, make sure final tax adjustments return to the ledger so the next year opens on an explained balance.
