Carry forward UCC by the filed tax class

Bring forward the undepreciated capital cost, or UCC, from the accepted prior Schedule 8. Preserve the tax class and any required separate treatment. A general-ledger category such as computers or vehicles may not provide enough detail to reproduce the tax schedule, especially after reorganizations or assets with different acquisition histories.

CRA's 2026 edition of Schedule 8 applies to 2025 and later tax years and includes acquisitions, adjustments, dispositions, recapture, terminal loss and CCA. Use the applicable current form as the schedule's map. Do not retain old column references in a workbook after the form has changed; match the meaning of each field to the current layout.

Separate acquisition from availability for use

Keep the invoice date, delivery date and evidence of when the property became available for use. Identify earlier purchases that become available this year and current purchases still awaiting essential completion. Give the tax preparer the supporting facts for the available-for-use assessment instead of selecting the payment date because it is easiest to export.

The current form distinguishes accelerated investment incentive property from reaccelerated investment incentive property, alongside specified zero-emission classes. Retain acquisition dates and the facts needed to assess the relevant category. Avoid applying a universal first-year factor or half-year rule to every addition; the form's notes set out class and timing distinctions that the preparer must review.

Give adjustments their own explanation

List assistance, repayments, transfers and other changes separately from ordinary purchases. Identify the related property and original transaction, including adjustments arising after a disposal. A single net additions amount can conceal why tax cost changed and whether an amount has already been included elsewhere.

For every adjustment, retain its legal or financial document, effective date and proposed treatment. Ask the preparer to approve the sign and destination before calculating the allowance. Reconcile the tax-class population to the asset register while keeping differences explicit; book depreciation, financing balances and tax-cost adjustments answer different questions.

Review dispositions and classes with no property left

Record the property sold, original tax cost, proceeds and disposal expenses. The form generally limits the reported proceeds amount to capital cost, with stated exceptions. Keep the actual sale proceeds available for any separate gain analysis. A tax-pool deduction should not erase the difference between the sales price and the amount used in Schedule 8.

Identify whether any property remains in each class at year-end. A negative UCC movement can require recapture; a positive balance with no remaining property can require terminal-loss treatment, subject to exceptions. Do not automatically continue CCA on an empty class or force a negative balance to zero without showing the tax consequence.

Reconcile the deduction and closing balance separately

Show the reviewed CCA claim, any recapture or terminal loss, and the closing UCC carried forward. Check that each reaches the correct part of the return. Preserve the calculation supporting incentive adjustments separately from permanent class movements. The next preparer should be able to identify the remaining tax pool and the property history without mistaking a first-year calculation adjustment for a second acquisition.
