Check a consolidation elimination matrix for missing pairs

Validate entity pairs, directions, currencies, and repeated eliminations before accepting a group reporting total.

Define the perimeter and the directional pairs

Begin with the approved list of entities included in the report and a stable identifier for each. Build the matrix from the entity reporting submissions using counterparty identifiers, not free-text names alone. Distinguish an amount due from another entity from an amount due to it. A transposed direction can produce an apparently reasonable total while assigning the elimination to the wrong pair.

IFRS 10 establishes control as the basis for consolidation and includes exceptions that need assessment. The accountant should approve the reporting perimeter under the applicable framework. The matrix tests the approved population; it should not decide consolidation scope merely because an entity appears in a related-party account.

Reconcile each pair before combining the group

For every pair, compare the submitted balances in a common agreed form and retain the original currency detail. Identify timing, classification, translation, and missing-entry differences. Resolve them using the supporting transactions. Do not post an aggregate group plug that cancels the net difference while leaving individual pairs unexplained.

In a hypothetical three-entity group, Entity A records $20,000 due from B and $5,000 due from C. B records $20,000 due to A, while C records nothing. The combined receivable and payable totals differ by $5,000. The matrix should point to the A-C pair, allowing the reviewer to investigate that specific obligation instead of adjusting the larger A-B balance.

Check that each elimination appears once

Give every approved elimination a reference and record its source pairs, accounts, and period. Compare automated eliminations with manual reporting entries. An accountant may add a manual correction while a consolidation rule later processes the same pair, producing a double elimination. Reconcile the final entry population after all rules and adjustments have run.

Also inspect reciprocal entries with opposite directions. Two entries can cancel each other numerically and leave the original group balance unchanged. Check the intended effect by pair and statement line, including both income-statement and balance-sheet consequences where applicable. A balanced elimination journal only establishes that its debits equal its credits.

Retain a residual view by cause

After posting, show remaining balances and differences by entity pair. Label supported timing items, translation effects, and unresolved matters separately. The accountant should determine the treatment of each cause. A matrix with every cell forced to zero can conceal a genuine group-reporting issue if the underlying reason was never established.

Trace selected final statement lines back through the elimination register to entity submissions. Then trace selected entity balances forward to their elimination or retained presentation. The two directions help reveal omitted pairs and unrelated balances swept into an elimination. Keep the report version and source submission versions with the check.

Control the next rollforward

Record which eliminations are current-period movements, which carry as opening balances, and which reverse or are replaced by later entity postings. Review changes in entity identifiers and ownership against the approved perimeter. A copied matrix can otherwise continue to eliminate an entity that is no longer included or fail to include a newly approved member.

Archive the final pair reconciliation, elimination population, residual analysis, and group statement tie-out together. The next preparer should be able to reproduce the group effect from the entity files and approved entries. Unresolved pairs should retain their original references and owners so the next close does not turn an old difference into a fresh unexplained residual.
