Does a sales commission qualify as a contract-cost asset?

Assess incremental commission costs, expected recovery and the benefit period before building an IFRS 15 contract-acquisition asset schedule.

Ask whether the cost exists because the contract was obtained

Start with the approved compensation terms and identify the event that creates each payment. A success-based commission can differ from a salary, proposal cost or discretionary team bonus. The payroll account used to pay it does not settle whether it is a cost of acquiring a particular customer contract.

IFRS 15 requires recognition of recoverable incremental contract-acquisition costs as an asset. Incremental means the cost would not have arisen without obtaining the contract. Apply that test to the actual obligation; labeling an entire sales department's spending customer acquisition does not make the whole amount eligible.

Trace each proposed asset to its compensation rule

Provide the deal identifier, plan version, recipient, earning event and approved calculation. Identify tiered rates, shared credits and conditions that may change what is owed. Where a bonus depends on a wider portfolio or continued employment, give the reviewer the complete conditions rather than allocating it mechanically across successful deals.

Keep the recognition of the employee obligation and the classification of the resulting cost distinguishable. A commission payable may need an accrual while its expense or asset treatment is assessed. Likewise, a payment in advance does not prove the related acquisition cost has been incurred under the approved arrangement.

Support recovery and the period of benefit

Provide the relevant contract economics and evidence supporting expected recovery. Discuss cancellations, refunds, collection concerns and changes in anticipated services. Avoid relying on a companywide margin target when the proposed asset relates to a materially different customer arrangement.

The amortization assessment follows the goods or services to which the acquisition asset relates. Give the accountant renewal terms, subsequent commission arrangements and customer-retention evidence where relevant. An initial invoice period or salesperson's payment date should not become the amortization period by default. Preserve the judgment about anticipated renewals rather than extending every asset using a general lifetime-value metric.

Check the practical expedient before applying it

IFRS 15 permits immediate expensing as a practical expedient when the otherwise applicable amortization period is one year or less. Obtain the reviewer's eligibility conclusion and policy election. A one-year customer order does not answer the question if the asset's assessed benefit includes other relevant services.

For an illustrative approved asset of $2,400 with a supported 24-month straight-line amortization pattern, the full-month charge would be $100. This is calculation practice after the accounting decisions, not a recommended customer life. The actual schedule must follow the approved transfer pattern, start date and any partial-period convention.

Reconcile additions and review remaining recoverability

Roll the asset from opening balance through approved additions, amortization, impairment and other supported changes. Tie additions back to compensation records without capitalizing the same commission twice when payroll pays an earlier accrual. Route customer terminations and commission clawbacks for assessment, retaining the original asset history and the reason for each subsequent adjustment.
