Stripe vs Braintree: compare payment methods and the records behind checkout

Evaluate Stripe and PayPal Braintree through wallets, saved payment methods, integration ownership, failed payments, and the data needed for reconciliation.

Specify the payment methods that must work

Stripe and PayPal Braintree should be compared against the payment methods, countries, recurring-payment needs, and integration the business actually requires. Braintree is not simply another name for adding a PayPal button. Its documentation describes a payment integration with cards and other methods, subject to availability and setup.

Stripe documents several integration routes, while Braintree documents supported payment methods and storage of reusable payment information in its vault. Use those sources to define the configuration for your account. A method's appearance in documentation does not establish that it is available for every merchant country, currency, device, or transaction type.

Distinguish initial payment from future permission

A customer completing a purchase is a different event from agreeing that a payment method may be saved and charged again. If the business needs subscriptions, installments, or later charges, identify the customer agreement, the technical setup, and the record connecting them. Have the implementation team explain how those records are retained and changed.

Braintree describes payment methods associated with customers and represented by vault tokens. Those identifiers are part of a particular payment arrangement; they should not be treated as universally portable card numbers. For both finalists, ask what can be reused, under which conditions, and how the business handles a customer removing or replacing a method. Avoid designing customer-service procedures around an assumption that saved credentials always remain chargeable.

Test the checkout your application will run

Have the developer name the exact integration approach and supported software components. Then test your order types, currencies, device sizes, and returning-customer flow. Include an interrupted payment and a customer who goes back to change an order. A successful sample payment in a vendor sandbox does not establish that the surrounding application handles those events.

Decide which system owns the final order state. The store should not fulfill an order merely because the browser reached a confirmation page if the payment still needs verification. Equally, a delayed browser response should not cause a second charge. Ask the developer to show how the application identifies the same purchase across retries and status checks without creating duplicate financial records.

Compare the difficult payment cases

Use one acceptance sheet for both proposed integrations. The cases below matter more than a long list of payment logos that your customers may never use.

Compare the difficult payment cases
CaseEvidence required
New customerSupported method, correct amount, and a stable order reference
Saved methodCustomer agreement, reusable identifier, and removal process
Additional customer actionA clear return to the correct order after completion
Uncertain resultStatus recovery without a duplicate charge or fulfillment
Partial refundA link to the original payment and the remaining amount
Processor exitDocumented export or migration limits for records and credentials

Give finance the payment and settlement records

Ask each finalist for sample transaction, adjustment, dispute, fee, and payout reports. The accountant needs to connect the order to the payment and the payment to the bank deposit. If wallet activity follows a different reporting or settlement path in the proposed arrangement, identify that path explicitly.

Use an illustrative $120 order that receives a $20 refund in a later period. Keep the original order, payment, refund, and any fees distinguishable. Then trace the net effect to settlement. A single net number can conceal timing differences and make a legitimate refund look like missing sales. The integration should retain stable identifiers that customer service and accounting can both use.

Price engineering as well as processing

Compare the actual processing quote, optional services, payment-method charges, currency conversion, and expected refund or dispute costs. Add implementation and continuing engineering support. An existing, well-maintained integration can have value that a slightly different headline transaction rate does not capture.

Ask who monitors failures, updates supported software components, tests changes, and answers finance questions about missing records. Include the work of moving existing customers if the purchase involves a switch. Some records or credentials may require a controlled migration process; do not assume a database export completes the transition or that every customer can be moved without action.

Choose after proving the continuing workflow

Select the configuration that supports the methods customers need, gives engineering a maintainable integration, and leaves finance with traceable records. Stripe or Braintree may satisfy those requirements. The decision should explain the specific fit rather than use a broad claim that one provider is universally better for developers or larger companies.

Before signing, keep the supported-method confirmation, integration scope, settlement sample, and migration conditions together. Those records make future changes easier to assess when the business adds subscriptions, another currency, or a new sales channel. They also establish what the implementation team must deliver before the new checkout becomes the source of live customer payments.
