Synder vs A2X: choose the accounting detail your ecommerce business needs

Compare Synder and A2X using transaction detail, payout summaries, mapping, corrections, and the source records needed to explain every ecommerce deposit.

Decide what belongs in the ledger

The key question in a Synder versus A2X evaluation is how much detail the accounting system should receive and where the supporting records will remain. An online seller may need summarized activity that explains each payout. Another business may need individual customer or transaction records for a particular accounting process. More entries are not automatically better evidence.

Synder documents both per-transaction and summary sync modes. Its summary mode groups activity for a selected period, while its detailed mode records individual financial events. A2X documents settlement summaries and controlled posting to connected accounting systems. The comparison should therefore use the actual modes and channels proposed, rather than label Synder as detail-only or assume every A2X workflow has identical output.

Work backward from one bank deposit

Choose a settlement containing ordinary sales, a discount, a refund, fees, and any tax or other adjustment relevant to your business. The accounting reviewer should explain how the provider arrived at the deposit. Retain enough transaction detail to investigate a disputed amount without forcing every order into the general ledger.

For an illustrative payout, begin with $10,000 of collections, subtract $500 of refunds and $300 of fees, and arrive at $9,200 before any other adjustments. The trial must preserve those components. Recording $9,200 as sales would lose information; recording both a detailed import and a summary for the same activity would duplicate it.

Include a second payment route used by the same store. A storefront order and its processor payment can describe the same sale from different angles. Decide which source records the sale and which supplies payment or fee information. Write that ownership down for each connected channel before enabling automatic posting.

Choose detail for a stated reason

Ask why the accountant needs an individual record in the ledger. Customer-level receivables, specific invoice matching, or a connected operational workflow may justify it. If the need is only to investigate an occasional order, retained detail in the sales platform or connector may be enough, provided it remains accessible and reconciles to the summary.

Choose detail for a stated reason
RequirementEvidence to request from the proposed mode
Payout reconciliationSales components, deductions, dates, and settlement references
Customer receivablesThe required invoice and payment relationship, where supported
Management categoriesApproved mapping by the dimensions actually needed
Order investigationA dependable route from ledger amount to source detail
Period endActivity split or adjusted according to the accountant's cutoff policy
CorrectionsA reviewed change that does not create a second copy

Make mapping a reviewable accounting decision

Synder's summary documentation explains that mapping determines where summary components post. A2X's posting documentation describes reviewing and manually posting entries before enabling automation. Use that review stage to confirm the proposed accounts, tax treatment, clearing balances, and reporting categories with the accountant.

Do not approve a mapping solely because the deposit reconciles. An incorrect revenue category or tax account can still leave the net cash total unchanged. Add one unfamiliar transaction type to the sample and see whether it is held for review or assigned automatically. The selected process should make an unmapped item visible to someone who understands its meaning.

Test a settlement spanning the period boundary as well. Sales activity, processor balance movements, and bank payouts can have different dates. The implementation should preserve the information needed for the company's accounting policy rather than force all activity into the day cash reached the bank.

Agree how historical corrections will work

Synder documents a rollback, rebuild, and resync process for changing summaries already posted. That is a product operation, not automatic permission to alter a closed accounting period. Ask the accountant to define when a historical record may change and when a separate adjustment is required.

For either finalist, test a corrected mapping after a sample entry has been reviewed. Inspect the original record, the replacement or adjustment, the links to supporting activity, and the clearing balance. The operator should know which systems are changed and how to confirm that no duplicate or orphaned entry remains.

Choose a migration start date with the same care. Identify the last transaction or settlement handled by the previous process and the first handled by the new connector. Overlapping imports should be an intentional, controlled test in a separate environment, not an accidental production overlap.

Buy the mode that passes the accounting sample

Compare channel coverage, connected ledgers, transaction or order allowances, historical imports, users, support, and the chosen sync mode. Include the time required to maintain mapping when a store adds a new product, market, or payment method. Verify feature availability in the specific plan and connector combination being quoted.

Choose Synder or A2X when the accountant can explain the deposit, trace a disputed component, and correct an error without duplicating activity. The strongest result is a clear division between the ledger summary, the source detail, and the person responsible for reviewing exceptions. That arrangement matters more than the number of rows imported.
