How registered agent works in Institution

What a registered agent does, and what Institution handles for you.

Updated 2026-10-11

A registered agent is the person or company a state lists to receive official legal and government mail for your business, such as service of process and state notices. Most states require every company to have one.

What Institution does

Institution coordinates registered agent service with a third-party provider. Your workspace keeps the status of that service, the renewal date, and any notices received in one place, next to your formation and company records.

  • Registered agent provider coordination
  • Provider confirmation and service status
  • Renewal date tracking
  • Notice tracking in Institution
  • Company and formation records kept together

What the status tells you

The Registered Agent page shows the service status, the provider, and the renewal date once the service is active. Before activation, those fields read Not linked yet or Shown after activation.

Note

Registered agent service is separate from having a virtual office or mailing address. The agent receives official legal mail for the company at a physical address in the state.
