Read the merchant arrangement first
A shopper's installment schedule does not necessarily describe when the merchant gets paid. In the buy now, pay later model described by Stripe, the merchant receives the purchase amount while the provider collects the shopper's installments. Bank availability still follows the merchant's actual settlement and payout arrangements.
Distinguish that arrangement from installments the business bills and collects itself. The latter can leave a customer receivable with the merchant. Keep the provider agreement, payment method, and settlement rules with the accounting setup rather than classifying every installment offer identically.
Match the order to the provider transaction
Record the order amount, tax, shipping, payment reference, merchant fee, and net settlement. Reconcile those components to the provider's report. Do not create four separate sales merely because the customer chose four installments.
For an illustrative $400 order with a hypothetical $24 merchant fee and no other adjustments, the net settlement is $376. The example fee is not a quoted provider rate. The shopper's four-payment plan does not turn the merchant's sales value into $1,600 or require four bank receipts under this assumed arrangement.
Keep refunds and disputes attached to the original sale
A return can affect the merchant settlement and the shopper's outstanding plan through the provider's process. Follow the current method-specific refund rules and retain the provider's confirmation. Do not tell the shopper to stop installments independently of that process or assume a store credit has canceled the financing arrangement.
Review whether fees are returned, whether partial refunds are supported, and how disputes or adjustments appear in settlement reports. These terms vary. Record the actual outcome rather than using the treatment from an ordinary card transaction without checking it.
Compare payment methods on a consistent order basis
For a business review, compare net order revenue, merchant charges, returns, and fulfillment costs by payment method. Separate observed differences from causal claims. A higher average order value among installment users does not by itself prove that offering the method caused the increase.
At close, tie completed merchant payments and adjustments to the clearing balance and bank payouts. Investigate unpaid or held merchant settlements separately from the shopper's repayment status. The finance team's outstanding-balance list should reflect what the business is actually entitled to receive under its agreement.
