List the offers a buyer can actually combine
Before launching an offer, inventory the active automatic discounts, customer codes, loyalty rewards, product bundles and shipping promotions. Include manual discounts used by support or store staff. Identify which offers can reach the same buyer and basket. Reviewing only the new campaign overlooks older codes that remain valid and may materially change the checkout price.
Shopify distinguishes product, order and shipping discounts, with combination rules and eligibility requirements. Its documented sequence applies product discounts before order discounts and shipping discounts last. Inspect the current settings and supported sales channel; do not assume a combination works identically across every plan, checkout or third-party app.

Calculate the outcome instead of adding percentages
Use completed test checkouts to verify the amount charged. A hypothetical $100 eligible item receives a 20% product discount, leaving $80. If a permitted 10% order discount then applies to that reduced amount, the item amount becomes $72. The total reduction is $28, not $30. This example assumes the stated sequential rules and excludes other order elements.
Add product cost and the incremental costs of serving that basket. If the hypothetical item costs $40 and payment, picking and delivery together cost $18, the $72 sale leaves $14 before fixed operating costs. If a free gift adds $4 of cost, the contribution becomes $10. Compare those outcomes with the campaign's approved economic limits.
Use the platform's allocation and rounding in the final test result. When a fixed discount covers several items, the amount assigned to each line affects later product margin and refunds. Retain the line-level receipt so the team can reproduce the calculation rather than relying on a screenshot of the advertised offer.
Test the baskets most likely to expose an error
Include a qualifying basket, one just below the threshold, mixed eligible and excluded products, multiple quantities and a basket with a low-margin item. Add a code that should combine and one that should be rejected. Test whether removing an item changes eligibility and whether the shipping threshold uses the amount the team expects.
Run the relevant paths for online, subscription or POS purchases when those channels participate. Record the channel, test time, offer versions, expected result and actual result. A test that works in an admin preview is incomplete if the customer uses a different checkout. Resolve discrepancies before campaign traffic makes them expensive.
Approve the configuration and watch the first orders
Have the promotion owner approve both the customer terms and the tested price outcomes. Have finance approve the contribution assumptions, including the most expensive permitted basket. If an intentionally generous combination remains available, document its limit and budget so staff can distinguish it from a configuration mistake.
Review a small sample of actual orders immediately after launch for the same combinations. Check that test orders are excluded from operating results and that real transactions reach the accounting integration with the discount detail intact. Preserve the final test matrix for future changes, especially when an app update or a new automatic discount can alter an established campaign.
