Write the cutoff as a timestamp with a time zone
A report labeled October can use a different boundary from another report with the same label. Record the start and end timestamps, time zone and event field for each export. Distinguish order creation, payment capture, fulfillment and settlement. Converting a timestamp does not make different business events equivalent.
Shopify identifies reporting time zones as one reason its analytics can differ from other services. Treat that as a diagnostic possibility, not a conclusion that every difference is harmless. First confirm that the reports cover the same stores, currencies, statuses and metric definition, then isolate events near the cutoff.

Build a boundary population from individual events
Export a narrow period around the end of the month with original timestamps and stable transaction identifiers. Convert a copy into the reporting time zone using a timezone-aware tool, preserving the source value. Retain the applicable daylight-saving behavior for the date instead of using a fixed offset throughout the year.
For a hypothetical event at 23:30 in a zone that is four hours behind UTC on that date, the corresponding UTC time is 03:30 the next day. One report may therefore include the order on the final local day of the month while another includes it on the first UTC day of the next month. The event is still one order.
Check both sides of the boundary. Moving only the transactions that explain a shortage can conceal an offsetting group at the beginning of the period. A complete bridge identifies additions and removals under the chosen reporting boundary.
Separate time-zone differences from late changes
An order edited, refunded or imported later can change historical reporting even when all time zones agree. Compare the source event date with the date the system received or updated it. Keep delayed synchronization and genuine next-period activity in separate groups. The accountant needs to know whether the discrepancy reflects a reporting view, missing data or a substantive transaction change.
Do not alter the original transaction date solely to force two dashboards to match. Agree the accounting cutoff and preserve the source timestamps. If a journal or accrual is required under the reporting policy, document the specific population and the planned reversal or follow-up. A reporting conversion should remain reproducible without rewriting operational history.
Save a reusable report specification
Document the selected metric, date field, time zone, filters and boundary convention with the recurring reconciliation. Include the extraction time, because a later export may include additional updates. Use the same specification for comparison periods and disclose any change to management reports.
At the next close, rerun the boundary check only for material exceptions and confirm that previously identified timing items appear in the expected period. The finished reconciliation should show the source total, the identified boundary movements and the agreed reporting total. Any residual should remain visible for investigation instead of being labeled time-zone difference without transaction support.
