Check whether the correction window is still open
GSTR-1A gives an Indian GST taxpayer an optional way to add missing outward supplies or amend records for the same tax period after GSTR-1 and before the corresponding GSTR-3B is filed. Establish both filing statuses before preparing a correction. A draft saved in accounting software does not show whether the portal still permits the intended action.
The GST Portal says the facility opens after the later of the GSTR-1 due date and its actual filing date. It can be filed only once for that period. Earlier-period amendments and a change to the recipient's GSTIN follow different routes. Record the actual error and ask the return preparer to confirm the permitted route before anyone edits the filing data.

Show the original value, corrected value and reason
Give every proposed change a row containing the original invoice reference, reporting table, filed amount, proposed amount and supporting document. Explain whether it fixes an omission, classification or amount. Keep the original filed GSTR-1 download intact. The correction file should explain how the proposed result differs from what the department already received.
Consider an illustrative invoice reported with taxable value of INR48,000 when the approved document shows INR84,000. The difference is INR36,000, but the preparer must establish which values the amendment table expects. Entering the difference into a field expecting the corrected total creates another error. Review the resulting liability rather than assuming that an apparently successful upload proves the amounts are right.
Separate a reporting error from a commercial change. If the customer received a revised invoice or credit note, retain that document and its approval. If only the return disclosure was wrong, explain why the underlying customer balance remains unchanged.
Reconcile the effect on the corresponding GSTR-3B
After GSTR-1A is filed, compare the accepted correction with the liability used for GSTR-3B. The portal's comparison report includes GSTR-1, IFF and GSTR-1A alongside GSTR-3B. Use the report to locate differences, then trace each material difference to the document-level correction file.
Keep a record of any manual adjustment already made in the GSTR-3B workpaper. An automatic update and an earlier manual adjustment can represent the same change. Have the preparer explain the final amount before approval, especially where the correction affects more than one tax component or supply category.

Close the change with filing evidence and customer follow-up
Save the filed GSTR-1A, acknowledgment, final GSTR-3B and approved reconciliation together. Record who reviewed the change and whether any customer needs a corrected document. A customer-facing explanation should distinguish the invoice's commercial amount from the timing of its appearance in GST records.
Assign any unresolved item to a later permitted correction process with an owner and checked deadline. Do not leave abandoned saved records in GSTR-1A: the portal warns that saved but unfiled records can block GSTR-3B. Resolve their status with the preparer, then verify that the final return package contains the intended version.
