Interest is financing income, not customer sales
A business can earn interest simply by holding cash. Posting that amount to ordinary product or service revenue makes operating growth and margins harder to interpret.
Use a separate interest-income category appropriate to the company's reporting.
Reconcile each source account
Bank statements can show monthly interest, promotional bonuses, sweep earnings, and other credits. Record the amount from the institution's statement and keep the related account identifiable.
If interest is accrued before payment under the company's accounting policy, reconcile the receivable to later cash.
Compare year-end tax reporting with the ledger
Financial institutions can issue Form 1099-INT or other tax reporting when applicable. Compare those forms with the accounting records and investigate timing or entity differences before filing.
Do not adjust the ledger blindly to a tax form without understanding the reason for any difference.
Keep interest visible in cash planning
Interest can be meaningful for companies holding large reserves, but it should not be treated as recurring operating performance unless management intentionally analyzes it that way.
Separating it gives founders a cleaner view of both treasury yield and core business revenue.
Questions buyers usually ask
Should bank interest be recorded as sales revenue?
Usually it is clearer to record it separately from customer operating revenue so the business can distinguish treasury income from core sales.
What if Form 1099-INT does not match the books?
Investigate timing, account ownership, accruals, corrections, and the financial institution's reporting before making an adjustment.

Contact InstitutionSmall-business bookkeeping is the system that turns sales, expenses, payroll, debt, taxes, and owner activity into reliable financial statements. Here is how to build it so the books remain useful all year, not only at tax time.
A month-end close turns a live transaction feed into reviewed financial statements. This 10-step workflow covers transaction cutoff, reconciliations, payroll, receivables, debt, adjustments, analytical review, and a clean final reporting package.
A reliable monthly close is not a pile of categorized transactions. It is a repeatable process that reconciles source accounts, resolves exceptions, reviews the balance sheet, publishes statements, and gives operators a stable version of the month.
