Prove the opening balance before reviewing the rollforward

Check that a monthly reconciliation begins with the accepted prior closing balance, including approved changes, entity scope, and account mapping.

Anchor the schedule to an accepted version

A rollforward can calculate perfectly from the wrong opening balance. Before reviewing additions and reductions, identify the prior period's accepted closing schedule and ledger version. Compare those amounts with the opening column in the current file. Keep the source version visible so a reviewer can reproduce the starting point.

Use the same entity, account population, currency, and unit. A combined schedule, a single-entity trial balance, and a report rounded to thousands can all look similar enough to be confused. Record these conditions beside the opening amount. If the previous month remains provisional, say so and name the person responsible for supplying the accepted replacement.

Bridge changes made after the prior review

When last month's ledger changed after the schedule was signed off, prepare a short bridge rather than overwriting the old closing column. Start with the accepted amount, identify each approved later adjustment, and show the revised opening balance. Include the correction reference and the date it became part of the ledger.

In an illustrative schedule, the accepted closing asset balance is $72,000. An approved $4,000 correction reduces that balance before the current close. The revised opening balance is $68,000. The current month's movements should begin from $68,000, while the bridge explains why an earlier report still shows $72,000. The example assumes the reviewer has already determined the appropriate period and treatment.

Identify mapping differences separately

An account split, merger, or renamed schedule can change where an opening balance appears without changing the total. Map the old identifiers to the new ones and reconcile both the total and the individual components. Keep amounts that have no destination visible. A matching aggregate cannot establish that every contract, asset, or obligation moved to the right place.

PCAOB AS 1105 addresses the accuracy and completeness of company-produced information used as audit evidence. For this internal workflow, the practical application is to check the transferred population as well as its summed balance; the audit standard itself does not set a universal monthly procedure.

Use independent checks for copied formulas

Inspect whether the opening column refers to the prior closing column or to an earlier saved range. A workbook can copy the correct visible number once and still use a stale number in a hidden calculation. Compare the beginning balance in the movement formula, the displayed opening amount, and the actual ledger extract.

For schedules with many items, check records that disappeared, changed identifiers, or were partially disposed of. These cases are more revealing than reviewing only unchanged rows. Preserve legitimate zero rows where they explain a disposal or settlement, then decide how the next period will retain the historical reference without carrying unnecessary active calculations.

Release one starting point for downstream work

Once the bridge is approved, provide the same opening version to the cash-flow preparer, statement compiler, and any management-reporting owner who uses the balance. Tell them which prior version it supersedes and whether comparative reporting needs a separate assessment. Updating one reconciliation does not automatically refresh another person's model.

Store the accepted opening proof with the current rollforward. When someone asks why the month began at a different amount from the previous pack, the answer should be the documented bridge. If a portion remains unsupported, keep that limitation explicit and assign the investigation before the current schedule is treated as a fully supported balance.
