Inspect the invoice lines behind the unusual month

If revenue jumps when a large annual invoice is issued, check the service dates before assuming sales accelerated. Inspect the contract, invoice line items, and recognition schedule together. A billing amount can be correct while the dates used to spread it across reporting periods are missing or wrong.

Stripe documents that standalone invoice lines without a service period can be recognized when the invoice finalizes under its default behavior. That is software behavior, not a conclusion that the customer's contract should be accounted for that way. Review the configuration against the policy your accountant has approved.

Look for repeatable sources of bad dates

Compare invoices created by subscriptions with invoices entered manually, imported from another system, or issued for implementation work. The automated subscription path may populate fields that a manual path leaves blank. Also check whether a migration replaced original service dates with the import date.

Review a sample from each creation path, including renewals and amendments. Sort the export for missing periods, an end date before a start date, unusually short periods, and annual products with same-day service dates. These are review flags, not instructions to change every matching record automatically.

Work out the affected periods before posting a fix

For a simplified example, assume a $6,000 contract should be recognized evenly over six complete months. Recording all $6,000 in the first month overstates that month's revenue by $5,000 relative to the assumed schedule. The later months are understated by $1,000 each until the error is corrected.

Prepare the expected schedule and compare it with the exported report. Identify which periods are already closed and whether reports or returns have used those figures. Have the accounting owner decide how corrections should be recorded and communicated under the applicable reporting requirements.

Correct the source and check the downstream entry

Where the platform supports it, correct service-period data through the documented workflow or recognition rules. Keep the reason and approval with the affected invoice reference. Do not assume changing a field will update every exported journal or previously delivered report.

If a manual ledger adjustment was already posted, check whether the corrected source report will create another entry for the same difference. Reconcile the revised schedule to the ledger and reverse or adjust any duplicate correction with approval. Then add the failing invoice path to the monthly exception check so the next manual invoice receives the same review.
