Map every source of sales before choosing software
List websites, marketplaces, sales-led invoices, credit notes, manual orders, and any legacy system still issuing bills. Record which legal entity sells through each channel. Ask how each proposed implementation receives the relevant activity and distinguishes records that should be included from transactions handled differently under the company's tax analysis.
Your advisor should determine the applicable obligations and product treatment. The software evaluation then tests whether those decisions can be configured and supported with complete data. A threshold alert drawn from only one channel cannot replace a review of the business's full facts, including activity that never reaches that system.
Use an illustrative business with $30,000 of website sales and $20,000 of separately invoiced sales in a test period. The input reconciliation should explain both populations. Those figures are a completeness example, not a jurisdictional registration threshold or advice about whether tax is due.

Keep registration settings distinct from registration services
Stripe's documentation separates recording an existing registration in the system from requesting a registration service. It also states that expiring a registration setting stops the relevant Stripe collection behavior without automatically deregistering the business with the authority. Those are materially different actions.
For either proposal, identify who determines where to register, who submits the application, who confirms its effective date, and who maintains the software setting. Keep the authority's confirmation with the configuration record. A user should not infer that a dashboard location means an application was submitted or approved unless the workflow explicitly establishes that result.

Ask for a separate answer on every workstream
Use this sheet with the vendor and tax advisor. Include the necessary products, integrations, service providers, and internal owners in the final scope.
| Workstream | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Calculation | Are our products, locations, entities, and transaction types supported? |
| Registration | Who determines the need and completes the authority registration? |
| Exemptions | How are evidence, review, effective dates, and customer records maintained? |
| Returns | Who prepares, reviews, submits, and retains the filing? |
| Remittance | Who authorizes funding and confirms the authority received payment? |
| Corrections | How do refunds, missing sales, and later adjustments reach the right period? |
Inspect a product and exemption exception
Give each finalist a small catalog containing the actual product types your advisor has reviewed. Include a bundle or service arrangement that needs specific treatment. Ask which data fields carry the approved classification and how a change is reviewed before it affects live transactions.
Then use an exempt-customer scenario approved by the advisor. Determine where supporting documents reside and how the proposed tools connect them to the relevant customer and transaction. Avalara offers exemption-management products, but the exact service belongs in the quote. For Stripe, verify that the required evidence and exemption workflow are supported in the proposed implementation or assigned elsewhere.

Require a filing and funding handoff
Stripe states that registration and filing are separate services and documents automated filing, partner filing, and self-filing routes. Avalara likewise describes returns services alongside calculation. Obtain the actual filing coverage, prerequisites, responsibilities, and deadlines for your arrangement rather than assuming calculation activates filing everywhere.
Have finance reconcile a sample return dataset to the source sales and tax accounts before any submission. Identify who investigates missing transactions and who approves the final figures. Retain submission and payment confirmations separately: a prepared return, a submitted return, and a funded remittance are different stages.

Select the complete, maintainable configuration
Compare the required calculation usage, connected systems, registrations, returns, exemption tools, support, and implementation. Test a refund, an incorrect address, and a corrected product classification before launch. The business should understand how each case affects the transaction record and the downstream filing work.
Stripe Tax may fit a business whose proposed sales flows and service needs align with its documented scope. Avalara may fit a broader tax configuration or a particular ERP and exemption workflow. The deciding evidence is supported coverage for your business, with a qualified reviewer and a named owner for each remaining task.
