Unbilled revenue accounting: track work earned before the customer invoice is sent

Some businesses complete a milestone or service before billing. A disciplined unbilled schedule connects earned amounts to contracts, future invoices, cash collection, and the month-end close.

Unbilled revenue begins with evidence of work earned

The concept is relevant when a business has performed work or reached an earning event before the normal billing date. It is not a tool for pulling future sales into the current month.

Use the signed contract, approved milestone, time record, delivery evidence, or usage report that supports the amount.

Maintain a customer-level roll-forward

Track customer, contract, earning period, amount recognized, invoice expected date, invoice number once issued, amount cleared, and any remaining difference. Reconcile the total schedule to the ledger.

Large balances should have a named commercial owner because billing delays can become collection delays.

Clear the balance when the invoice is issued

When billing catches up, move the amount from the unbilled account into ordinary accounts receivable without recording revenue a second time. Investigate differences between the accrued amount and final invoice.

Credits, scope changes, or billing disputes should be reflected explicitly rather than left inside a stale unbilled balance.

Watch the operational signal

A rising unbilled balance can mean strong work in progress, but it can also signal slow billing, unclear milestones, missing customer approvals, or poor contract administration.

Finance should report both the accounting balance and the reason it is not yet billable or invoiced.
