Check your tax return status

What each status on your return means, and what the next step is.

Updated 2026-10-11

Tax shows where your return stands and what happens next. The next step is labeled at the top of the return workflow.

What each stage means

  • Not started or organizer in progress: you need to complete the organizer.
  • Organizer submitted, in review, preparing, ready for review, and review complete: Institution review is in progress. You do not have to do anything unless a question comes back.
  • Needs clarification: the preparer asked something. Respond to clarification.
  • Ready to sign: your return is prepared. Review and sign it.
  • Signed: you have signed. The return is waiting on filing.
  • Filed and completed: the return has been filed, and the work is finished.
  • Extension filed: an extension was filed for the year.
  • On hold: work is paused. Message the team to find out why.

Where to see the details

  • Return activity shows recorded workflow events.
  • Return documents shows client-visible tax files and return versions.
  • Requested documents lists open document requests tied to tax work.
  • Books used for this return shows which reviewed bookkeeping the return was prepared from.

If the linked books change in a material way after they were reviewed, the package is flagged as needing review so the return and the books do not drift apart.
