A letter from the IRS or a state tax agency usually has a response date printed on it. Do not ignore it, and do not wait until tax season to mention it.
Steps
- Scan or photograph the whole letter, front and back. Keep the original.
- Upload it in Documents and note that it is a tax notice.
- Open a support case under Tax preparation help, or send a request, and include the notice number and the response date.
- Check the response date on the letter and mention it right away, so there is time to respond before it passes.
The organizer has a section for IRS and state notices, so you can also record them when you complete it.
Why speed matters
The agency's deadline is on the letter. Tell us about it as soon as it arrives so there is time to respond.
