If your records will not be ready in time, ask for an extension early. The request goes to the tax team, who file it.
Steps
- Open Tax and choose Request extension.
- Add the reason, and a deadline if one applies. Both are optional, but a reason helps.
- Submit the request. You see Extension request submitted, and the return shows Extension requested.
When the extension has been filed, the return status changes to Extension filed.
An extension generally gives you more time to file, not more time to pay what you owe. Ask your tax professional what to pay by the original date.
Deadlines vary by entity type, year, and state. See the tax reference in Resources for general dates, and confirm yours with the team.
