Set up your chart of accounts

Start from an industry template or build the list of categories yourself.

Updated 2026-10-11

The chart of accounts is the list of categories your books use, such as revenue, software, payroll, and rent. Open Bookkeeping, then Chart of Accounts.

Start from a template

Choose an industry and apply a template to fill in a ready-made chart. A template can only be applied to an empty chart, so do this before you add your own accounts.

Add or change accounts

  • Add an account manually with a number, name, type, subtype, and an optional tax line.
  • Search by name or number, and filter by type.
  • Edit or archive accounts from the list. Select your company first if you have more than one.

A habit worth having

Add a category only when you will use it again. A few clear categories make the books easier to read than dozens of near-duplicates.

Note

Categories come from your chart of accounts. Add the category first if you want it to be used.
