Getting started

Set up your company profile

Where your legal entity details live and why it pays to get them right early.

Updated 2026-10-11

Institution uses one company profile across bookkeeping, tax, and company workflows, so you enter your details once. Open Settings, then Company setup to review or change them.

What the profile holds

  • Business information such as the legal company name, any DBA or trade name, entity type, formation state, and formation date.
  • Accounting records such as your accounting method (for example accrual), fiscal year end, and the system you use today.
  • Financial sources you want connected to your books, like bank accounts, cards, and payment processors.
  • Optional custom instructions for Institution Max, such as how a recurring payout should be categorized.

Check these first

The legal name and entity type matter most. Tax and compliance work is prepared from them, so a typo or the wrong entity type spreads into everything built on top.

Changing details later

Some edits save straight away. Others are sent to the team as a change request, and you will see a confirmation that the request went through. If a detail looks wrong and you cannot edit it, open a request and choose Team / contact update. You can also restart guided onboarding from the same page.
